Born in Nevers, Auguste-Alexandre Ducrot served in Algeria and in the Italian campaign (1859). During the franco-prussian war (1870), he fought at the battle of Woerth (or Reichshoffen, August 6, 1870). A prisoner after the defeat at Sedan, he escaped and was placed in command of the Second Army of Paris during the capital's siege by Prussians. A monarchist deputy to the National Assembly (1817-72), then commander of the 8th Corps of Bourges (1872-78), General Ducrot attempted a monarchist coup d'état but was forced to retreat after the republican suppression of the attempted overthrow.
